1)      I spent a blissful morning attending a lecture at the Center for Leadership at Florida International University’s College of Business, which I was invited to attend by the Center’s own Dr. Nathan Hiller, a member of the Academic Advisory Board and a widely respected authority in the field of leadership development. (Dr. Nathan was integral in the development of the Center’s Women on the Move program) The Center has developed an impressive series of  Leadership Lectures , which leads me to the 2nd Good Thing:

2)      The speaker today was Dr. Martin Seligman! The Center’s Executive Director, Dr. Maidique, affectionately introduced Dr. Seligman as the “world authority on happiness”. Seligman is the Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania and the founder of positive psychology, a branch of psychology which focuses on the empirical study of such things as positive emotions. He truly is considered to be an authority on Well Being and Happiness! Today, Seligman engaged the 300-plus attendees with his PERMA model of well-being. PERMA includes Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Purpose, and Accomplishment. Each PERMA element contributes to well-being, while none exclusively defines it, (but here, listen for yourself). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weVPtrXMMx8. As you will hear, Seligman calls for no less than the reinvention of governance and education, an idea I found Enormously appealing after our recent government shutdown.  The day left me extremely hopeful for all of us, which leads me to the 3rd Good Thing:

3)      We can enhance our own well-being with this simple practice:

Each evening write down 3 things that went well and why they went well! That’s it! Six months later this simple practice was shown to reduce depression and increase life-satisfaction. Good news! Only warning he gave was that it’s addictive. Enjoy…
